Summary of Brit Salsafest 2006 Survey

The response to our Brit Salsafest 2006 survey was overwhelmingly positive. Overall, you told us the event highlights were: the breathtaking venues and ballroom dancefloor, the quality of instruction, the music policy and the overall event organisation.  You provided us with some detailed information about workshops and instructor performance, and most importantly highlighted key areas for us to work on for next year.

Teaching Quality

Overall, you thought the teaching quality was excellent.  Teachers were assessed by you for their knowledge, usefulness of material taught, communication skills, workshop enjoyment and session organisation, and were scored out of 4.  The average score for all teachers was 3.6 and 52% of teachers scored over 3.8.  For those teachers scoring less well, the overriding issue was lack of effective rotation in classes (see below.)

Any instructors wishing to receive their individual feedback should contact us and provide a postal address.

Testimonials

Here is a sample of some of the feedback we received:

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all involved in organising such a fantastic Salsa festival in Blackpool. I was really impressed with how well organised the whole event was. Also, the Winter Gardens is a fabulous venue with quality dance floors and enough space for the workshops, and what a ballroom for a salsa party! We will DEFINITELY be back for more next year!

Excellent event, learnt loads, brill parties!

This is a quick feedback that I found the Brit Salsafest simply Magical.  This was of course due to the beautiful and breathtaking venues such as the Empress but also to the organisers, volunteers, teachers, performers and salseros/as joining the event. In particular, I would like to send my special thanks to Salsa Dance Squad, Tropical Gem, Super Mario, Susan Montero, Leon Rose, The Swing Guys, Marchant and Miriam and of course Emma and Kate.  The greatest revelation for me had to be Edie the Salsa Freak and her class on Spinning on Sunday night.  I was simply blown away by her wits, in-depth knowledge and practical and down-to-earth teaching of the "spinning" skills.

The most satisfying thing for myself is to see people come back to my classes with such enthusiasm to improve and visit other salsa events. Several even came on the Monday evening and were buzzing. These are people who previously would have considered Manchester too far to travel for salsa. It was a great opportunity to have so many world class dancers on the doorstep and to dance in such a fantastic venue.

- The number of shows was much more sensible. - I *really* liked having the track / artist / album names shown during the night. - It's great to have decent seating next to the dance floor. - I'm a convert to fruit smoothies.

Just to say that this was my first salsa weekend and it was amazing!! I enjoyed every second of it and the venue was perfect!!! The shows, the classes all of it was brilliant! A big congratulations to all the organisers as it was fab, and roll on next year cos i will be coming back!!!

Just wanted to say that we had an absolutely fantastic time during the weekend of 3 - 4 - 5 February. An awesome experience that I will never forget and can't wait for the next Blackpool weekend...hopefully same time next year. I was a part of the Milton Keynes posse!!!!!!! I couldn't find fault with anything!

The Brit Salsa Fest was a fantastic event, very well organised and put together, the shows were fab and the majority of the workshops were brill.  To Everyone who took the time to arrange this event, thank you.

I had a wonderful time as did everyone I spoke to. I met a lot of people, saw a lot of familiar faces. The entire event was great the guest teachers were great especially the South African couple, I greatly enjoyed their style and way of teaching.

The best weekender I've been to. Most importantly, great spacious venue, floor and fantastic uninterrupted music.

I and many friends went to Blackpool for the venue and no other reason and we weren’t disappointed! Loads of capacity and the most popular instructors getting the main rooms meant everyone got to the classes they wanted to. The partner rotation in the classes was very well managed. The layout, facilities and décor of the venue were excellent.

Salsafest was truly magnificent, with the shows particularly great.

Thanks a lot. Can't wait till the next one and what a fabulous venue.

The venue was great, the dancing was great - and importantly, it was a FRIENDLY, inclusive event. Well done!!

I was one of your volunteers, and I thoroughly enjoyed it was a great experience. You looked after us all so well thank you. I also had a lot of friends that came for the weekend who also had a fantastic weekend.

Great venue and very friendly feel to the weekend ie not too intimidating and not too many egos!

Very well done to you all you put on a great weekend.

Had a fantastic time at Brit salsa fest. The Winter Gardens seems to be the ideal venue for a salsa congress in the North (and a very good dance floor). Well done, I think all of your effort over the last year has paid off.

As promised some feedback for the Britfest. I truly enjoyed all the classes especially the styling classes, they were AMAZING. Also went to Nicky and Gormack’s Advanced Shines, also FANTASTIC!!! Other fab classes were from Mauricio Reyes and Michael Pottinger, basically every class I attended was great.

This was our first time at a congress and what a wonderful time we had, it all seemed to run so smoothly and effortlessly which we know means that a lot of hard work has been put in, the winter gardens are amazing what a venue.  Thanks to everyone that made it so special, we definitely now have the bug and are looking into Bognor.

Dear Paul, Emma and all the organisers, volunteers and every one else involved in arranging a most successful week end at the Winter Gardens. The choice of venue was superb, the classes and workshops were of the greatest standard, the shows were breathtaking and we would all like to thank you very much for working so hard.

Thank you ever so much for the absolutely excellent event.  I really loved it and had an excellent time.  Came on my own but still had loads of dances and chats and connections. - Excellent venue - fantastic building - good location - brilliant staff - loads of ladies toilets - good dance floors - Good Organisation - Thank you it was well organised

Had a great weekend and especially enjoyed Super Mario's classes.

I had a fab time in Blackpool.........what a venue and you did us proud with the teachers, the variety of classes and the general running of the whole gig. I will certainly be booking for next year.

It was absolutely fantastic.  You have to do it again next year...we're relying you.

…one week later and wishing it was the Brit Salsa Fest starting all over again!!! Missing it to the MAX!! ;o(

Dear All (involved with The Brit Salsa Fest), What can I say? Words cannot truly express what an absolutely fantastic fulfilling fun weekend I had – 100% more than I even anticipated. Apart from the odd fitness weekends I have attended in the past, this was my very first on the Salsa scene and it certainly won’t be my last!! I suffered the consequences for two days just recovering – but you know what? It was so worth it.

I don’t like going to salsa socials because I find them very cliquey, but we went to Brit Fest to do a few classes and had a very fun-filled weekend. This has changed my mind about the salsa scene I had so many dances it was unreal, thanks to you and the crew, well done all.

Just a line to let you know how much I enjoyed the Britfest at Blackpool... it was fabulous! Not only did I have enormous fun, but I enjoyed all the classes I attended & thought the whole event was organised splendidly. There was something for everybody. Here’s to the next event.

The Brit Salsafest in Blackpool was the first such festival that i have attended anywhere, having only taken up salsa dancing about 18 months ago. I have to say i was blown away by the whole experience, it was fantastic!!! The classes were great, ace teachers, especially Leon, Marchant and Super Mario, the shows were unbelievable and everybody was friendly and approachable.

Well where do i start?!!! i had such an amazing time and i still suffering from the lack of sleep now!

WHAT A FANTASTIC EVENT!! WE ALL HAD AN AMAZING TIME, WITH WONDERFUL CLASSES, SHOWS, DANCING AND PEOPLE.CAN'T WAIT TILL THE NEXT ONE!

Excellent experience all round - music, floor, instuctors, organisation all superb and I believe that view is shared by most, if not all, of us who came over from Dublin (must have been about 40 of us).

Wow what a weekend. The venue was fantastic, the dance floor wow, people great, what more can someone ask for? Are we looking at the same venue for next year? Let me know and i will be the first to book.

The whole event was fantastic. Great workshops and teachers - with a really friendly atmosphere. Evening shows were just the right length and with varied performances. The stalls were also good fun ... and the juicer / smoothie stall was a godsend! A fabulous weekend which i'm highly recommending to everyone. :-)

I would just like to say on behalf of myself and as far as I can hear from all the Irish Salsa heads the congress was absolutely fabulous. The venue blew my mind after seeing the beautiful Winter Gardens so many times in Come Dancing I couldn’t believe that I was actually there. All the people who ran the Winter Gardens and the congress itself were extremely helpful and friendly.  The shows were great and I think everyone agreed that the Swing Salsa was so different and so good they stole the shows.  All classes were on time and well run.

Hope you are taking some time off after giving over 2000 salsa addicts an absolutely amazing weekend. :) Congratulations to you and your team for an extremely well organized and professional event.

I have to say, that was one excellent weekend!!! I'm still trying to recover from it all. The displays were fantastic, the DJ's amazing and you couldn't ask for a better dance floor to dance on.  Classes were wonderful with an excellent venue to boot. Wonderful all round!

Areas for Improvement

The survey highlighted a few problem areas with one main issue emerging:  visibility of instructors in certain classes.  This was down partly to class size and partly to lack of effective rotation in classes.  We will be looking at how best to improve this for next year and have taken note of your suggestions which included the use of screens in the larger venues, more classes, higher staging, more effective teacher briefing on rotation and the monitoring of rotation by our Workshop staff.

The other main problem area flagged by you was sound quality for part of Friday night and some microphone/audio problems in some workshops and during the shows.  Again, we will be reviewing our entire sound policy and management, including our choice of suppliers and equipment requirements, over the next few months to ensure we improve things in this important area.
